After church Sunday, Alice saw Florence Simpson and Ellen Moore standing outside talking. Florence was showing Ellen something that looked like a quilt square. Glancing around, Alice saw Rose approaching them. Alice hurried toward the women, but Rose got there first.

“Good morning, Florence, Ellen. I have a question about the retreat,” Rose said. Then she saw the square as Florence moved it behind her back.

“Are you working on a quilt? I didn’t know you made quilts. You should come to our guild meetings.”

Florence appeared to be speechless for the first time that Alice could remember.

“I don’t,” Florence blurted out. “I’m … this is … I’m trying to make …”

“May I see it?” Rose asked.

“It’s a surprise,” Ellen said just as Florence brought her hand around. Both women looked as if they’d been caught with their hands in the collection box.

“It’s for … one of the ladies who helps so much at church,” Ellen said.

“Really? How nice. I’d be happy to make a square for your surprise,” Rose said.

Florence and Ellen stared at Rose. Alice jumped in. “I couldn’t help overhearing. That would be lovely, Rose. You do such beautiful work.”

“So does Florence,” Rose said, holding out Florence’s square. “This is beautiful.”

Florence took it back, stammering, “It … it’s not finished yet. I may not use this one for the, uh … surprise.”

Alice realized Florence felt trapped, and so she said, “Rose, I haven’t had a chance to talk to you since you were at the inn Monday. How are your plans going?” Alice asked.

Before Rose could reply, Florence and Ellen excused themselves.

Rose looked a bit puzzled by their sudden departure. She shrugged and answered, “I don’t know, Alice. This is getting so complicated. Caleb was going to watch the farm for us, but he has injured his ankle, and the doctor told him he might have torn a tendon and need surgery now. Ben is taking care of his own place and Caleb’s, so I can’t ask him. I can probably arrange for help during the day, but I really need someone there at night as well. Can you think of anyone who might be able to stay out at the farm that week while we’re gone? It would have to be someone Samuel can trust with the animals.” Rose’s gaze implored Alice. “I’m getting desperate. Our anniversary is only two weeks away.”

“No one comes to mind immediately, but I’ll ask Louise and Jane if they can think of anyone.”

“Bless you, Alice.” Rose gave Alice a hug. “I’ll keep looking. There shouldn’t be any surprises at our farm. The ewes aren’t due to lamb until mid-March.”

“We’ll put our thinking caps on,” Alice assured her, giving her hug. “I’ll call you if we come up with anything.”
